PerkinElmer Australia Molcular Spectroscopy Training Course

The 1st of six PerkinElmer Australia Molecular Spectroscopy training courses will be held in all the major capital cities during August/September 2007 starting off in Melbourne on the 23rd August 2007.

This basic training course aims to provide an understanding of the fundamentals of Infrared, UV/Vis and Fluorescence spectroscopy.  It is expected that you will have a good understanding of the benefits of each instrument and be able to make decisions on the best sampling techniques.

Dr Wei-Boon Teo, The Regional Molecular Spectroscopy Product Manager, will be conducting the training course and practical workshops.  PerkinElmer is pleased to invite you and hope that you and your colleagues can join us.

Please register by using our online register form or alternatively email Chuang-Fong.Kong, National Product Specialist.

PerkinElmer Sponsors MPGPCR Meeting

This year’s meeting will be held on July 18th and 19th at the Victorian College of Pharmacy ( Monash University) in Parkville, Victoria, close to the Melbourne central business district and entertainment precincts.

The “Molecular Pharmacology of G Protein-Coupled Receptors” (MPGPCR) meetings are focused on recent developments in the field, with key presentations from leading researchers from around the world.

This is a focused and intimate meeting (maximum of 200 attendees), emphasising novel concepts in GPCR pharmacology and drug discovery.

The meeting provides a relaxed interface between students, postdoctoral fellows, academic and industrial scientists from around the globe that encourages interaction, collaboration and debate on the latest research in the field.

The MPGPCR meetings are now held every 2 years in Australia, in the second half of the year. The 5th meeting will be held in 2009.

The major sponsors for the 2007 meeting are PerkinElmer Life Sciences/TGR Biosciences and Monash University. The meeting is presented by the Monash Drug Discovery Biology Initiative.

Expand Your Application Capabilities

During the month of July, PerkinElmer is inviting Thermal Analysts to visit us at local venues to discuss how the DMA 8000 and HyperDSC can expand applications capabilities.

The DMA 8000 is one of the most flexible, cost effective systems available today. Its innovative design, high functionality, and flexible operation make the DMA 8000 ideal for advanced research and routine quality testing in the Polymers, Composites, Pharmaceutical and Food Industries.

The HyperDSC is the only true fast scan DSC technique, with scanning rates of up to 500 K/min.  The technique allows you to obtain additional information  in seconds rather than minutes, and is used by many leading Pharmaceutical and Polymer R&D laboratories.

Boon-Chun Tan, regional Thermal Analysis Product Manager, will introduce these products with theory and practical workshops.  PerkinElmer is pleased to invite you and hope that you can take part and share your experiences.  Starting 9th July, venues and agenda for the meetings are shown below:

9th July 2007      Melbourne, Monash University

11th July 2007    Sydney, University of New South Wales

13th July 2007    Brisbane, Queensland University

17th July 2007    Adelaide,  University of South Australia

20th July 2007    New Zealand,  Canterbury University Christchurch

If you or others in your organisation are interested in this event and would like to register, please feel free to contact John Arthur, National Infrared/Thermal Product Specialist for PerkinElmer, or click here to download the registration form.

PerkinElmer NSW ICP-MS user group meeting 2007

Thirty five people attended the 2007 PerkinElmer NSW ICPMS user group meeting which was held in the Solid State & Elemental Analysis Centre at the University of NSW. The highly successful meeting saw contributions from PerkinElmer staff as well as a number of industry research Scientists with expertise in Trace Metal and ICPMS analysis.

The two day program included an introductory training course for new users as well as application presentations and discussion groups. A number of PerkinElmer instruments were on display, including systems owned by the University, a PerkinElmer Optima 5300DV ICP-OES and a PerkinElmer DRC-e ICPMS. Across campus, the University owns three Optima 3000 units and an Elan 6100 ICPMS, as well as several Thermal, FTIR and Chromatography systems.

Highlights of the meeting included a presentation by Dr Bill Maher from the University of Canberra on a range of novel Speciation and Trapping techniques for ICPMS. Bill has been awarded two Royal Australian Chemistry Institute Gold medals for his research in Trace Metal Speciation. Dr Gavin Robinson from Robinson Scientific (NZ) offered an interesting overview of instrument optimization and method development procedures. Gavin has over fifteen years experience with ICPMS techniques and his wisdom was well received.  Another popular speaker was Vesna Dolic from Glass Expansion. Vesna has many years of experience with ICP technology, including twelve years at PerkinElmer as Applications Specialist. She spoke about new sample introduction devises for ICPMS. Dr Michael Wu also led a constructive discussion group for Interference handling with DRC parameters.

Given the response to this years meeting we are looking to expand to two days of presentations and “hands-on” workshop for next year. Thank you to those who attended and we hope to see you in 2008!!

PerkinElmer would like to thank Dr Grainne Moran, Dr Chris Marjo and Dorothy Yu from the UNSW Solid State and Elemental Analysis Facility for their assistance in organising this event and the hospitality they offered the attendee’s.
