PerkinElmer NSW ICP-MS user group meeting 2007

Thirty five people attended the 2007 PerkinElmer NSW ICPMS user group meeting which was held in the Solid State & Elemental Analysis Centre at the University of NSW. The highly successful meeting saw contributions from PerkinElmer staff as well as a number of industry research Scientists with expertise in Trace Metal and ICPMS analysis.

The two day program included an introductory training course for new users as well as application presentations and discussion groups. A number of PerkinElmer instruments were on display, including systems owned by the University, a PerkinElmer Optima 5300DV ICP-OES and a PerkinElmer DRC-e ICPMS. Across campus, the University owns three Optima 3000 units and an Elan 6100 ICPMS, as well as several Thermal, FTIR and Chromatography systems.

Highlights of the meeting included a presentation by Dr Bill Maher from the University of Canberra on a range of novel Speciation and Trapping techniques for ICPMS. Bill has been awarded two Royal Australian Chemistry Institute Gold medals for his research in Trace Metal Speciation. Dr Gavin Robinson from Robinson Scientific (NZ) offered an interesting overview of instrument optimization and method development procedures. Gavin has over fifteen years experience with ICPMS techniques and his wisdom was well received.  Another popular speaker was Vesna Dolic from Glass Expansion. Vesna has many years of experience with ICP technology, including twelve years at PerkinElmer as Applications Specialist. She spoke about new sample introduction devises for ICPMS. Dr Michael Wu also led a constructive discussion group for Interference handling with DRC parameters.

Given the response to this years meeting we are looking to expand to two days of presentations and “hands-on” workshop for next year. Thank you to those who attended and we hope to see you in 2008!!

PerkinElmer would like to thank Dr Grainne Moran, Dr Chris Marjo and Dorothy Yu from the UNSW Solid State and Elemental Analysis Facility for their assistance in organising this event and the hospitality they offered the attendee’s.

Graeme Chapple
