Description: Human exposure to lead through the workplace or home environment can lead to accumulation of toxic levels in blood, leading to high blood pressure, fertility problems, and nerve and joint pain. More insidious, exposure of children to subclinical lead levels can lead to behavioral and learning problems. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has set a "level of concern" for children at 10 micrograms per deciliter. Measurement of lead at these low levels has been accomplished using GFAA by many laboratories. With the increased need for productivity, ICP-MS can also be used. The use of these techniques will be discussed for this application.
