CHICAGO, IL -- February 26, 2007 -- PerkinElmer, Inc. (NYSE: PKI), a global leader in Health Sciences and Photonics and the market leader in molecular spectroscopy, today introduced the first in a series of easy-to-use Raman spectroscopy instruments at PITTCON® 2007, Booth 843. The bench-top RamanStation™ 400 Raman spectrometer combines research-grade performance with push-button ease-of-use. The RamanStation’s dispersive echelle-spectrograph technology allows reliable performance, without the need for moving parts, while enabling detection of the full spectral range at a high resolution in a single acquisition.
Raman is a non-destructive technique based on the detection of scattered light to identify and analyze molecular species. It is a complementary analytical tool to Fourier Transform Infrared (FT-IR) and Fourier Transform Near-Infrared (FT-NIR) spectroscopy and is used in pharmaceutical, chemical, forensics and academic industries.

Until now, Raman spectroscopy was limited to a narrow sector of highly skilled researchers trained in complex Raman analysis. The new RamanStation technology breaks down the barriers and now makes Raman accessible to more than specially trained researchers. “With the push of a button, an operator can obtain high-quality information regarding the identification, composition and molecular structure of samples,” said Wells.
Wells noted that other Raman instruments utilize motorized parts in the optical pathway. This leads to slow data acquisition and instrument reliability issues. “The RamanStation’s advanced design provides considerably faster data collection and improved data reproducibility, and makes the need for time-consuming alignment obsolete,” he added.
PerkinElmer secured the advanced RamanStation technology through the recent, strategic acquisition of Avalon Instruments. This technology enables PerkinElmer to more fully support scientists utilizing molecular spectroscopy for sample identification, quantitative analysis and mapping applications in academic and industrial research and forensic science laboratories.
