Cellular Assays
Adoption of cellular assays (i.e. cell-based assays) has grown over the past decade, and today it encompasses a wide variety of procedures requiring high throughput and sophistication. With live cells as the foundation, these assays can focus on the measurement of cellular morphology, proliferation, toxicity, motility, or production of a detectable product (i.e. second messengers) in a more natural environment. For example, an enzyme assay performed in free solution lacks the cellular milieu that is now known to be highly complex and biochemically influential.
With development costs and research timelines increasing, cellular assays have become the cornerstone of biomedical research and an integral part of pre-clinical drug development, providing a viable and cost-effective precursor to costly in vivo testing. Moreover, with advancements in human genome work, proteomics and systems biology, these assays serve as ‘microlaboratories’ for high throughput and high content screening (HTS and HCS). Classically, HTS involved a single output, but the evolution of detection methods and biochemical toolsets has enabled detection of a number of outputs from a single sample. To support these requirements, our family of JANUS® automated liquid handling workstations provide flexible and scalable platforms to automate a variety of cellular assays.
