Blood Lead analysis by GFAA or ICP-MS Human exposure to lead through the workplace or home environment can lead to accumulation of toxic levels in blood, leading to high blood pressure, fertility problems, and nerve and joint pain. More insidious, exposure of children to subclinical lead levels can lead to behavioral and learning problems. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has set a "level of concern" for children at 10 micrograms per deciliter. Measurement of lead at these low levels has been accomplished using GFAA by many laboratories. With the increased need for productivity, ICP-MS can also be used. The use of these techniques will be discussed for this application. |

Applied Speciation Analysis in Environmental and Clinical Studies Speciation analysis can be a powerful tool for many scientists and professionals. It is essential for predicting and modeling fate, risk, and designing custom - tailored treatment strategies. Liquid or ion chromatography coupled to an ICP-MS is one of the most common tools for speciation analysis and becoming an accepted standard. This presentation will focus on various applications of IC/LC-ICP-MS for speciation analysis of arsenic, selenium, chromium, mercury and will present various cases where speciation analysis was used to make educated decisions for various problems. |

Example Applications in IR Spectroscopy to Aid the Understanding of Tissues Infrared (FTIR) imaging provides a new tool for disease detection, revealing compositional and structural information in tissue previously not available with contrast staining. The technical aspects of FTIR imaging will be reviewed. Single-point analysis, linescans, and mapping in reflectance, transmission, and ATR will be discussed. Example applications will be presented, with particular focus on recent studies of biological and biomedical systems using FTIR imaging. |
